Iron supplements are a group of iron formulas used to cure and prevent iron deficiencies, most often including iron anemia, which is the most common cause of deficiency. They are recommended for people with weak absorption, especially those with prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, and a diet that is low in iron. How Do Iron Supplements Help Deficiencies?
There are other conditions that are believed to be preventable by iron supplements, including anemia, bone disease, bleeding disorders, and gastrointestinal disorders such as peptic ulcers. Some research indicates that men with hemochromatosis may benefit from iron supplements. Hemochromatosis is a condition where the iron in a person’s blood cannot be divided equally into the red and white hemoglobin molecules. Since iron has the same molecular structure as oxygen, iron particles can actually diffuse into the red blood cells, causing anemia and deficiency in oxygen.
Levothyroxine (L-thyroxine) and hydroxytyrosol are two of the main ingredients found in most iron supplements. L-thyroxine is sometimes referred to as “the thyroid miracle supplement” because of its ability to enhance absorption of other nutrients and increase the number of red blood cells. It is believed that L-thyroxine increases the absorption of the other essential vitamins in the body, particularly those needed for optimal brain functioning. Some research indicates that people with iron-deficiency anemia may benefit from using L-thyroxine. However, additional studies must be conducted in order to determine whether this supplement is effective in cases where anemia is not the only cause of low red blood cell count.
